It's always a bit disconcerting when a book opens with the comment: "Due to the space restrictions this chapter unfortunately has been somewhat curtailed..."  You're telling me.  I get the feeling that the book was several pages too long, and most of this was recovered in a hurry by trimming what, to me, would have been the most useful chapter - the introduction of how signals work.
The rest of the book is a bit eclectic, but gives a widish range of signal examples, good photographs, and some dimensions it's useful to be able to scale from.  The book is primarily aimed at 4mm main line modellers building out of brass section (which is what I intended at the time of purchasing it) but still of general interest, and of use to those of us inclined to, probably inappropriately, place such signals on our narrow guage lines.  Just that those 'basic's pages are sorely missed.
